{"id":16162,"date":"2023-04-17T09:55:42","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T13:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/?p=16162"},"modified":"2023-08-17T13:44:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T17:44:30","slug":"marymounts-early-learning-academy-nears-completion-fall-2023-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/marymounts-early-learning-academy-nears-completion-fall-2023-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Marymount\u2019s Early Learning Academy nears completion, Fall 2023 opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Designed to fill a critical and deepening local workforce need as professionals with young children return to the office, Marymount University\u2019s new Early Learning Academy is nearing its Fall 2023 launch date as staff prepare to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/college-of-health-and-education\/school-of-education\/early-learning-academy\/\">an exceptional early childhood learning experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A year-round, full-day program for preschoolers of ages 2.5-5, the Early Learning Academy will serve families with a focus on high-quality and innovative early childhood education in which preschoolers experience learning through imagination, creativity and individualized opportunities and interventions while allowing the next generation of educators to observe, apply and research best practices in early childhood education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuided by research in child development, our goal is to provide a safe, dynamic play-based environment where children discover and reach their full potential in a diverse and engaging university setting,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/staff-members\/kristen-cunningham\/\">Kristen Cunningham<\/a>, Director of Marymount University\u2019s Early Learning Academy. \u201cIt\u2019s estimated that 90 percent of a child\u2019s brain development happens before the age of five, so it is critical that we provide enriching learning opportunities and a personalized approach that focuses on each child\u2019s unique strengths and abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16164\" src=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-2.jpg\" alt=\"Marymount\u2019s Early Learning Academy nears completion, Fall 2023 opening\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Conceptualized and designed by faculty from Marymount\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/education\/\">School of Education<\/a>, the Early Learning Academy was envisioned as a \u2018lab school\u2019 that will benefit from evidence-based research by faculty experts from across the University. This includes, in particular, areas of study such as <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/college-of-sciences-and-humanities\/school-of-social-and-behavioral-sciences\/undergraduate-programs\/psychology-b-a\/\">psychology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/health-sciences\/bachelor-of-science-in-health-sciences\/\">health sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/college-of-health-and-education\/nursing\/\">nursing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/counseling\/\">counseling<\/a> and, of course, education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited to officially welcome the Early Learning Academy into the overall Marymount community, as it will infuse all the available campus resources of a nationally ranked university into supporting young minds,\u201d explained <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/about-mu\/about-becerra\/\">Dr. Irma Becerra<\/a>, President of Marymount University. \u201cWith our lab school model, children can explore literacy and language, STEM, the arts, music, movement, nature and more in a safe and caring environment that fosters cognitive, emotional, physical and social growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Early Learning Academy will use <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingstrategies.com\/product\/the-creative-curriculum-for-preschool\/\">The Creative Curriculum \u00ae for Preschool<\/a>, a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that features exploration and discovery as a way of learning, enabling children to develop confidence, creativity and lifelong critical thinking skills. On-site benefits for children include a brand new state-of-the-art playground and classrooms, as well as full use of all University resources, including Marymount\u2019s gymnasium, pool, gardens, library and campus cafeteria.<\/p>\n<p>Marymount previously provided a similar offering through the Gerard Majella Child Care Center, which opened on campus in 1974 and served Arlington families for many years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16165\" src=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-3.jpg\" alt=\"Marymount\u2019s Early Learning Academy nears completion, Fall 2023 opening\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-3.jpg 700w, https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WEB-3-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a revival of that idea \u2013 we\u2019re building on the past with something that started with our passion for children,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/staff-members\/lisa-turissini\/\">Dr. Lisa Turissini<\/a>, Director of Marymount University\u2019s School of Education. \u201cPlus, we see that there\u2019s a big need in the Arlington community, and Marymount <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/about-mu\/involvement-service\/\">plays a crucial role in the region<\/a> through both economic development and serving others. Our Early Learning Academy initiative is a great demonstration of both of those ideas in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 6,000-square-foot portion of Marymount\u2019s Emerson G. Reinsch Library is currently being renovated to accommodate the physical space of the Early Learning Academy, with construction expected to be completed by late July. Class playdates are scheduled during the summer, with the first day of school scheduled for early September.<\/p>\n<p>Applications are currently being accepted for the 2023-2024 school year, with a maximum total of 64 spots available.
