{"id":12517,"date":"2021-12-06T12:37:54","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/?p=12517"},"modified":"2021-12-08T16:35:15","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T21:35:15","slug":"just-go-for-it-mu-exchange-student-from-northern-ireland-encourages-study-abroad-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/just-go-for-it-mu-exchange-student-from-northern-ireland-encourages-study-abroad-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cJust go for it\u201d: MU exchange student from Northern Ireland encourages study abroad experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a more than seven-hour journey across the Atlantic, Frank McCartan left his native Northern Ireland to reach Marymount University as an exchange student and recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nireland.britishcouncil.org\/opportunities\/study-usa\">Study USA<\/a> scholarship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCartan recently earned a degree in finance at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qub.ac.uk\/\">Queen&#8217;s University Belfast<\/a> and heard about the Study USA program from a friend. Unsure of whether or not he would be selected, McCartan applied for the scholarship and was overjoyed to learn that he had been accepted and would have the chance to pursue a certificate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qub.ac.uk\/directorates\/AcademicStudentAffairs\/AcademicAffairs\/GeneralRegulations\/StudyRegulations\/CertificateinAmericanBusinessPractice\/\">American Business Practice<\/a> while studying at Marymount University for an entire school year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would get the scholarship, but it has been the best thing I have ever done,\u201d McCartan said.<\/p>\n<p>The Study USA scholarship is awarded through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.org\/\">British Council<\/a>, the United Kingdom\u2019s international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relations, and is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economy-ni.gov.uk\/\">Department for the Economy<\/a>. The program offers about 60 students in Northern Ireland the opportunity to spend a semester or a year studying business or STEM at a U.S. college or university, with the goal of helping develop their career prospects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a challenging year for our students, and we are delighted that they will be able to take part in the program,\u201d said Jonathan Stewart, Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nireland.britishcouncil.org\/\">British Council Northern Ireland<\/a>. \u201cThey will join a growing alumni of students to act as ambassadors for Northern Ireland and our institutions, developing important long-term links and connections between the two countries. Through international mobility programs like Study USA, students are able to enhance their employability skills and also obtain greater intercultural understanding, helping to prepare them for work in a global economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For McCartan, the chance to travel and enhance his skills in finance were the biggest motivators in applying for the scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve really enjoyed the Marymount campus. It\u2019s just slightly outside Washington, D.C., so you have the best of both worlds,\u201d he said. \u201cThe campus is very green and picturesque, but at the same time you are only a quick Metro ride away from the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12558\" src=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/McCartanatAudiField.jpg\" alt=\"McCartan visits Audi Field to watch the D.C. United soccer team\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/McCartanatAudiField.jpg 700w, https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/McCartanatAudiField-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So far, McCartan says he&#8217;s visited multiple museums in D.C. and has watched local sports teams compete, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/wizards\/\">Washington Wizards<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcunited.com\/\">D.C. United<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Exchange student programs and opportunities to study abroad are an invaluable way to grow both personally and professionally while gaining insight into the education systems and cultures of other countries. And, it\u2019s an experience that McCartan encourages any student to try.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say just go for it. It took me out of my comfort zone and I\u2019m flying out here and loving it,\u201d McCartan said. \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for which I am extremely grateful to be taking part in.
