The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is a nationally normed survey based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development and examines influences that higher education has in shaping socially responsible leadership capacity and other educational outcomes related to leadership and service. The conceptual framework for the MSL is based on an inputs-environments-outputs model that allows researchers to examine the impact of environmental experiences by looking at whether students grow or change under varying environmental conditions. To date, more than 350 institutions and 610,000 students have participated in the study.

The survey uses a set of core scales based on the social change model. In addition to these scales, the survey reports scales related to Collective Racial Esteem, Spirituality, and Motivation to Lead and also includes questions specific to a consortium of Catholic universities consortium section and a set of custom questions supplied by Marymount.

More information on the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership

Marymount uses the results of this study throughout the university as an important method of assessing institutional effectiveness. The survey is administered every three years to all undergraduate students. Marymount participated in the survey in 2015 and 2018. The next administration is scheduled for Spring 2021.

Executive Summary2021 Results
