This protection extends to students who are pregnant, have experienced a pregnancy-related condition, or are new parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pregnancy-related conditions include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Childbirth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">False pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Miscarriage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Termination of a pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conditions arising in connection with pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recovery from any of the above conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students may request reasonable accommodations as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>How do I request reasonable accommodations?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Title IX accommodations are intended to reduce pregnancy-related barriers and provide equal access to MU programs and services in a reasonable manner. By definition, accommodations should not alter essential elements of a program, place other students at a disadvantage, or create institutional burden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because support cannot be issued retroactively, students who are pregnant should contact the Title IX Office immediately for support at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:titleix@marymount.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">titleix@marymount.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Title IX Office will discuss the pregnant or parenting student\u2019s needs and may ask for documentation that supports any requested accommodations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What type of reasonable accommodations may I request?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specific accommodations vary from student to student. Reasonable accommodations approved by the Title IX Office may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allowance of brief breaks during class;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a larger desk;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reasonable flexibility to reschedule examinations;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ability to consume food or beverages during class;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reasonable flexibility with some class absences as medically appropriate;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>continuance of academic studies after child birth without any negative consequences such as loss of academic credits or scholarships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>What if I have a pregnancy-related health condition?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students with pregnancy-related health conditions should contact Student Access Services as soon as possible to discuss accommodation support. Information about your pregnancy-related health condition is considered part of your educational record, is protected by FERPA, and will not be shared except with those MU personnel who need the information in order to provide academic support to you. You can learn more about SAS and pregnancy accommodations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/student-academic-hub\/student-access-services\/policies-and-legalities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What if I have been discriminated against based on my pregnancy or parenting status?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who believe they have experienced discrimination at MU as a result of a pregnancy-related condition or parenting status should make a report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?MarymountUniv&amp;layout_id=40\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students may also file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education and\/or the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), even if you have not filed a complaint with the University. If you file with OCR, make sure you do so within 180 days of when the discrimination took place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What are resources that are available to me as a pregnant or parenting student?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marymount University has a lactation center for pregnant and parenting students:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ballston Center Room 2032\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gerard Hall Commuter\u2019s Lounge (located in the connection between Gerard Hall and the Lodge; look for a sign that says \u201cMother\u2019s Room\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/health-wellness\/counseling-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Counseling Services\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/student-academic-hub\/student-access-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Access Services<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/registrar-s-office\/registration-information\/continuous-registration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Continuous Registration Information<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/health-wellness\/student-health-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Health Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (SHS can make referrals to local OBs\/CNMs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/housing\/view-our-rooms\/placemakr-marymount-ballston\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ballston Campus Apartments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Marymount University (graduate and undergraduate) students who are parents may apply to have their dependent child(ren) live with them in a private apartment).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marymount University is committed to providing a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for students who are pregnant or parenting.\u00a0 Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational settings.
