{"id":5533,"date":"2023-03-16T11:36:07","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T15:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/?page_id=5533"},"modified":"2026-02-19T13:37:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T18:37:50","slug":"emergency-notification-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/health-wellness\/emergency-notification-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Notification Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When students are absent for three or more days due to a crisis situation or unexpected, serious illness and are unable to contact their individual instructors directly, the Office of Student Health and Well-being can send out an Emergency Notification.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An email notification from the Office of Student Health and Well-being to a student\u2019s instructors and University officials. A copy of this message is sent to the student as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An announcement that an emergency situation (their own hospitalization, assault, accident, death in the family, etc.) prevents a student from contacting instructors directly and may also prevent them from fulfilling their academic responsibilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A source of information so faculty can anticipate the absence and, sometimes, can know when to expect the student to return to class.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A written reminder that the student should work directly with their instructors to determine how to complete any missed coursework during the absence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each instructor has the authority to make decisions about students\u2019 absences and how the absence will affect students\u2019 grades. Student Health and Well-being staff encourage faculty to keep in mind that students who utilize the emergency notification service are typically recovering from a crisis and would benefit from appropriate consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">HOW TO INITIATE AN EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?MarymountUniv&amp;layout_id=4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Submit an Emergency Notification Referral Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For immediate emergencies or crisis, call 911 or Campus Safety by phone at <a href=\"tel:7032841600\">703-284-1600<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be prepared to provide a detailed description of the emergency circumstances, as well as a reasonable explanation as to why you or the student is unable to contact their instructors directly. If possible, please include the length of time the student will be absent from classes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">OUTLINE OF AN EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students falling within the categories below will fall under the scope of utilizing the Emergency Notification Policy\/Form<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical illness<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any illness that requires isolation periods (per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/your-health\/isolation.html\">CDC<\/a> guidelines)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hospitalizations<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students that are hospitalized for physical or mental reasons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students that have recovery periods after being released<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crisis<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students experiencing severe mental distress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students undergoing bereavement periods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crisis of basic needs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Significant Distress<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If a student identifies that they are significantly struggling for a different reason and requests an Emergency Notification, it is at the discretion of the Case Manager and Wellness Team to grant the Emergency Notification.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION GUIDELINES<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Emergency Notification is <\/span><b>NOT <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">appropriate for non-emergency situations (e.g. car problems, planned absences, minor illnesses, or a past absence).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Emergency Notification is <\/span><b>NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a request or mandate to excuse an absence. (This decision is at the sole discretion of the instructor).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Emergency Notification is <\/span><b>NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a requirement for students. If a student contacts instructors about an emergency situation directly, it is not necessary to involve the Office of Student Health and Well-being as arrangements are made to resolve the absence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Emergency Notification is <\/span><b>NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> verification that the information the student has provided is true, however, the Office of Student Health and Well-being will request documentation of the absence. (Documentation may include letters, notes, or discharge papers from Student Health Center, physicians, or hospitals; obituaries; or other official documents.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergency Notifications are <\/span><b>NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> appropriate for long-term illnesses, disabilities, or absences. For assistance with long-term accommodations contact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/Academics\/Services-Resources\/Student-Access-Services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Access Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructors are always welcome to share information with the Student Health and Well-being staff about any student concern. Instructors may also contact the student directly to discuss the student\u2019s responsibility for completing missed course work, as well as any documentation required by the instructor when the student returns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff members within the Office of Student Health and Well-being typically contact the student after the emergency notification process to offer support and assistance as the student resumes their academic responsibilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowing each student\u2019s situation helps us provide the immediate help needed and to be better prepared when the student is able to return to class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When students are absent for three or more days due to a crisis situation or unexpected, serious illness and are unable to contact their individual instructors directly, the Office of Student Health and Well-being can send out an Emergency Notification.
