However, there are times when the actions and behaviors of community members impact others negatively.\u00a0The Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) was established to respond to these actions and behaviors with resources, support, and actions.\u00a0Marymount strives to be a safe and inclusive campus community. Bias incidents directly impact our ability to collaborate and work together and directly undermine\u00a0our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marymount.edu\/About-Mu\/Our-Mission-Vision-Plan?viewmode=0\">core university values<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bias Incident Response Team evaluates, investigates, and remediates bias-related violations of the Marymount University Student Community Conduct Code.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"accordion\" class=\"panel-group accordion\">\n<p><strong>Marymount University has no tolerance for hate.<\/strong> The university does not tolerate hate crimes or bias-motivated incidents and will respond to them with appropriate sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty, or staff who experience or witness any form of hate crime or bias-motivated incident should report it immediately.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?MarymountUniv&amp;layout_id=11\">Report a Bias Incident<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?MarymountUniv&amp;layout_id=40\">Report Sexual or Interpersonal Misconduct<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>BIRT FAQs<\/h2>\n<div id=\"FAQ1\">\n<div style=\"width: 100%;\"><button class=\"faq btn btn-primary\" style=\"margin: 10px 0px; float: right;\" type=\"button\">Expand All<\/button><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>What is a bias incident?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">\n<p>A bias incident refers to a behavior or act\u2014verbal, written, or physical\u2014which is personally directed against or targets an individual or group based on perceived or actual characteristics such as race, color, religious belief, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national or ethnic origin, disability, veteran status, or age.<\/p>\n<p>Behavior reflecting bias may constitute a violation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/student-life\/health-wellness\/student-conduct\/student-conduct-2\/\">Student Community Conduct Code<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>What are examples of bias or hate incidents?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">\n<ul>\n<li>slurs<\/li>\n<li>racial epithets (verbal and written)<\/li>\n<li>degrading language<\/li>\n<li>graffiti or defacement<\/li>\n<li>intimidation<\/li>\n<li>hate messages and symbols (Swastika, Pepe the Frog)<\/li>\n<li>ridiculing a person&#8217;s language or accent<\/li>\n<li>racially themed parties<\/li>\n<li>posting or commenting on social media related to someone&#8217;s identity in a bias matter<\/li>\n<li>insulting a person&#8217;s traditional manner of dress<\/li>\n<li>other subtle (and extreme) examples of bias incidents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>What happens when I report?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">Once a bias incident report is received by the BIRT, the reporter will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours. A team member will seek additional information regarding the incident, provide support resources, and schedule a time to meet with you, if appropriate.\u00a0The Team will review, assess the report and\u00a0develop\u00a0an action plan.\u00a0BIRT will explore options for resolution and work with the reporter and campus resources to resolve the incident.\u00a0 Anonymous reports will still be investigated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>What happens when I report anonymously?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">Anonymous reporting typically limits the University\u2019s ability to investigate, respond, and provide remedies. In order to ensure the University\u2019s ability to respond promptly and thoroughly, please share much information as possible with as much detail as possible. The team will work to protect the safety and preferences of the reporter while taking into account the broader needs on campus.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>What is bias incident response?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">\n<p>Bias incident response <strong><u>is<\/u>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing care<\/li>\n<li>Restorative<\/li>\n<li>Learning more and asking questions<\/li>\n<li>Education, conversation, mediation<\/li>\n<li>Proactive outreach<\/li>\n<li>Assessment, planning, and accountability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bias incident response <strong><u>isn&#8217;t<\/u>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thought-policing<\/li>\n<li>Censorship<\/li>\n<li>A way to avoid hard conversations<\/li>\n<li>Punishment<\/li>\n<li>More harmful than helpful<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>How will reports be used?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">Reports summarizing bias will be made available to campus leadership. In addition, summary reports indicating the types of bias that have been reported will be made available to members of the university community. These summary reports will also inform choices about future education and prevention programming efforts to address and reduce bias incidents at Marymount. The BIRT will work closely with Campus Safety and Emergency Management to send out alerts to notify the community of incidents causing substantial harm.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>Why should bias incidents be reported?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">Marymount values diversity and inclusion. It is important that we all take responsibility to report incidents that do not support the kind of community that respects the dignity of all people. Unreported incidents can\u2019t be addressed. When incidents go unaddressed it damages the trust the community has in the institution to create a welcoming campus climate. Your reports help to hold us accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default academicyr\">\n<div class=\"acd-heading\">\n<h3>Who are members of BIRT?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Answer\" src=\"\/App_Themes\/MarymountUniversity\/images\/arrow.png\" alt=\"Answer\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 accordian-sub-menu\">\n<p>BIRT is made up of a core group of trained staff who can respond to bias incidents involving students, faculty, and staff.
