Marymount University Student Counseling Services (SCS)

The mission of Student Counseling Services (SCS) is to promote the academic success, personal growth/ development, health and well-being of all Marymount students. We provide comprehensive mental health services, to include treatment, case management, education, and campus wide programming. Consistent with the RSHM mission to “serve those who are most in need of justice,” we are unwavering in our goal of meeting the diverse needs of the Marymount community, including students of diverse racial & ethnic backgrounds, disability status, sexual orientations, gender identities, religious/spiritual beliefs and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Walk-in hours are offered daily, typically from 2:00-3:00 pm.
- Walk-ins are 15-minute, one-on-one consultations with a counselor and do not require appointments.
- They are great opportunities for students who are curious about the services offered at Student Counseling Services and want to get more information; students who have specific needs and would like to quickly explore resources and supports on campus or in the community; students who would like to quickly problem-solve specific problems; and students who have a concern about a friend and want some guidance and support about how to support them.
- SCS counselors provide assistance to students experiencing a mental health crisis.
- Though not exhaustive, examples of a mental health crisis could include having serious thoughts of suicide, exhibiting self-harming behaviors, erratic and volatile behavior, and being a danger to self or others.
- A SCS staff counselor is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist students in crisis or to consult with faculty and staff who are concerned about a student.
- If a crisis occurs during office hours, concerned students, staff, and faculty should call SCS at (703) 526-6861 or come in (Berg Hall, 1st Floor). Once you arrive, promptly inform support staff that there is an urgent need to speak with a counselor.
- When the Counseling Center is closed, students in crisis or concerned faculty or staff should contact Campus Safety at (703) 284-1600 or the CA on call and ask to speak with the Counselor-On-Call.
Individual & Group Counseling
- Up to 12 individual counseling sessions are available to all students enrolled in at least one credit hour during a given semester.
- Counseling services are designed to be short-term, goal-directed, and best suited for students experiencing situational stressors, difficulties in adjusting to college life, relationship issues, problem-solving challenges, academic concerns, anxiety, and depression.
There are no limits on the number of groups that students can participate in. Three types of groups are offered: process groups, support groups, and psychoeducational groups.
- Process groups: Process groups typically have a theme (e.g. Understanding Self and Others) and are appropriate for a wide range of presenting concerns. Clients are encouraged to share concerns and goals with the group, set therapeutic goals, and give and receive in-the-moment interpersonal feedback that they can take with them and apply in other environments and relationships.
- Support groups: Support groups (e.g. Trauma Survivor Group) bring together clients dealing with a similar concern and allow them to connect with others, share their stories, and receive care support.
- Psychoeducational groups: Psychoeducational groups are structured groups (e.g. Anxiety Management) that generally involve a counselor presenting material and offering skills.
- SCS counselors promote mental health and wellness within the community through outreach activities.
- In addition to planned events and campaigns, SCS staff members tailor presentations to the needs or interests of particular audiences: classroom presentations, club meetings, and residence hall floor programs.
