State Licensure Requirements
Counseling (M.A.) — Specialization in School Counseling
Marymount’s Master of Arts in Counseling program specialization in School Counseling is accredited by CACREP, 500 Montgomery Street, Suite 350, Alexandria, VA 22314, and by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Individuals are eligible for licensure as school counselors (grades PK-12) in the Commonwealth of Virginia and are also eligible to sit for the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) examination toward the end of their program of study and begin the supervised experience necessary to become a licensed professional counselor upon completion of this degree program. Electives in any specializations should be done in consultations with advisors to meet licensure requirements in other states. In most states, school counselors are required to have licensure or certification to work as K-12 school counselors.
Students who are interested in working in states other than Virginia should contact the state board before enrolling in this program. State boards will generally evaluate each application in its entirety to make a final decision regarding professional licensure/certification. Additional requirements such as state-specific examinations, background checks, fees, additional training, experience and coursework, etc. may apply.
