We’re thrilled to announce that the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE), a specialty organization dedicated to optimal health and providing quality of life for older adults, will be honoring Dr. J Taylor Harden<\/strong> with the prestigious Mary Starke Harper Award this year! Named after Mary Starke Harper, an American Academy of Nursing Living Legend and a leading authority on mental health and aging, the award recognizes Harper ‘s advocacy for a strong support system for families caring for elderly adults. This award celebrates leaders whose exceptional achievements and leadership inspire others. Dr. J Taylor Harden, Distinguished Visiting Scholar Scientist and Mentor at the Center for Optimal Aging, Marymount University, is a gerontologist, nurse, educator, author, and public servant. Her research spans minority health, health disparities related to Alzheimer\u2019s Disease, and the recruitment and retention of older women and minorities in clinical studies. She also focuses on promoting the recruitment and retention of a skilled workforce in STEMM fields. Congratulations!<\/span><\/p>\n
\nDr. Shelly Aboagye has been selected as a NIH RCMAR NCC<\/span> Minority Serving Institution (MSI) Fellow<\/span><\/h1>\n
Dr. Shelly Aboagye<\/strong>, MCOA fellow, has been selected as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) fellow by the Resource Center for Minority Aging Research National Coordinating Center (RCMAR NCC) and a Complementary Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine R13 Diversity Fellow funded by the NIH NCCIH\/NCMRR grant #R13AT012585. This prestigious awards provide a stipend and several mentoring and networking opportunities. The RCMAR acknowledges world-class early career researchers from MSIs who have the potential to succeed in a career in aging research. This fellowships are a great way to enable her to further contribute to aging research while providing valuable opportunities to engage with top experts in the field. We\u2019re excited to see the lasting impact her work will have in the years ahead.<\/span><\/p>\nDr. Patricia Heyn has been elected as a Member at Large to the ACRM Board of Governors (BOG)<\/h1>\n
<\/strong>Dr. Patricia Heyn, Center director, is a prominent figure in the field of gerontology and has been elected as a Member at Large to the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) Board of Governors. ACRM, a non-profit medical association whose mission is to elevate the lives of disabled people and advocate for evidence-based research has afforded this honor to a few people, and we are excited to have our center director be a part of it. Dr. Heyn, with years of work in rehabilitation medicine, has said, \u201cI am excited to be a part of the board and continue my goal of contributing to the science.”<\/em>
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nDr. Uma Kelekar has been Appointed as an Academic Editor for BMC Geriatrics<\/h1>\n
<\/strong> Dr. Uma Kelekar, senior fellow at the MCOA, has been recognized for her significant contributions to aging research and appointed as an academic editor for the prestigious BMC Geriatrics Journal. With a wealth of experience in the fields of public health dentistry, health economics, and policy, Dr. Kelekar conducts groundbreaking research investigating the\u00a0 impact of oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices on the quality of life of older adults and how this might impact their cognition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
