It&#8217;s night before it&#8217;s afternoon<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">2024<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Wood, polymer clay, acrylic paint, flocking, brass clock hand, painted rug<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">58 x 20 x 20 inches<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Photo: Ethan Browning<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24pt\"><i>HALF-LIGHT<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">LANGDON GRAVES<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Curated by: Sal Pirrone<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/college-of-business-innovation-leadership-and-technology\/school-of-design-and-art\/cody-gallery\/ballston-center-gallery-2\/mending-time\/\">March 22 &#8211; May 3, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Artist Talk: Thursday, March 27, 5pm<br \/>\nOpening Reception: Thursday, March 27, 6-8pm<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cody Gallery is pleased to present <i>HALF-LIGHT<\/i>, a solo exhibition by Langdon Graves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This show marks her first major exhibition in the DC Metro area which opens March 22, and will remain on view through May 3.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Langdon will discuss her work in conversation with curator and Marymount faculty, Sal Pirrone, Thursday, March 27 at 5pm, followed by an opening reception from 6-8pm.<\/p>\n<p>Moving seamlessly between two and three dimensions, Graves builds an immersive experience with her exhibition, <i>HALF-LIGHT<\/i><i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Hand modeled drops of blood, rubber bands, a bird house, moths, and a single wisdom tooth set against a backdrop of hyper-saturated color present the viewer with an array of paradoxical moments within a timeless landscape. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Graves invokes a <i>soft fascination<\/i> in her work, loosely defined as, \u2018a state of gentle engagement and curiosity that allows for reflection and restoration\u2019. She writes, \u2018it\u2019s often associated with time spent reconnecting with nature and has become an unintentional step in my creative process.\u201d Paying more notice to what grows in her back yard and to the birds nesting on her fire escape, Graves<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>uses<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>what<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>she observes within their nature as an entry point to better understanding her own.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Themes of time, self-identity, and societal expectations of women are evident. In <i>Keep Away From Children<\/i>, Graves presents a kitchen drawer with carefully hand-crafted items that span three generations from her Grandmother, to her mother and herself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The contents include house ants, a classic ballpoint pen, and the last match in a matchbook that elongates and slinks towards the floor to evade its fate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With these objects and the drawer, itself, Graves reflects on family lineage, the things we keep by choice or by burden, and the expectations that accompany them.<\/p>\n<p>Cody Gallery is a contemporary art space created as a platform to support the arts and strengthen the arts community at Marymount University and the greater Washington DC area.
