{"id":33314,"date":"2024-09-23T14:47:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T18:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/?page_id=33314"},"modified":"2024-09-23T14:47:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T18:47:59","slug":"severe-economic-hardship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/center-global-engagement\/international-student-services\/current-students\/employment\/off-campus-employment\/severe-economic-hardship\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe Economic Hardship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To be eligible for Severe Economic Hardship employment authorization, immigration regulations require that you meet the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must be a full-time student in good standing and have been in valid F-1 status for at least one full academic year (two consecutive semesters).<\/li>\n<li>You must be able to document that the circumstances which led to your economic situation were unexpected and beyond your control.<\/li>\n<li>You must be capable of continuing full-time studies and maintaining F-1 status while engaged in economic hardship work permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>Step One<\/strong>:<\/em> Contact an ISSS Advisor to confirm your eligibility and to review the conditions and procedures for applying. It is recommended that you draft of a letter explaining your economic need and gather supporting evidence that documents your hardship.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Step Two:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0If you are eligible to apply for economic hardship, submit an\u00a0<strong>Off-Campus Employment<\/strong> request via Tab 4 with the ISSS Portal. Once submitted, an ISSS Advisor will review your request and, if you are eligible, issue you an updated I-20 with a <em>recommendation<\/em>\u00a0for severe economic hardship work authorization.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Step Three<\/strong>:<\/em> After an ISSS Advisor recommends Off-Campus employment on your I-20, gather the following documents for your application to USCIS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completed\u00a0form\u00a0<strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-765\u00a0(PDF)<\/a><\/u>\u00a0filled for category (C)(3)(iii)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Copy of passport identification\/photo page<\/li>\n<li>Copy of F-1 visa<\/li>\n<li>Most Recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-94<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0record\u00a0indicating F-1 status<\/li>\n<li>Copy of I-20 with the Off-Campus Employment Endorsement on page 2<\/li>\n<li>Copies of all previous I-20s<\/li>\n<li>Copies of previous employment authorization documents (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/g-1145\">Form G-1145<\/a>\u00a0(Not required, but recommended)<\/li>\n<li>A copy of your transcript<\/li>\n<li>Two passport-style photos<\/li>\n<li>Required\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/feecalculator\">fee payment<\/a><\/u> in the form of a check, cashier&#8217;s check, or money order, payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (verify fee, in case of increases, on the I-765 instructions)<\/li>\n<li>A letter written by you addressed to USCIS in which you describe in detail the circumstances that support your request for economic hardship employment authorization and a statement explaining why other employment options are unavailable or insufficient<\/li>\n<li>Supporting documentation confirming these circumstances (for example, a letter from your department to document the loss of a scholarship, or exchange rate data showing a currency devaluation, or a letter from an accountant confirming unexpected business losses)<\/li>\n<li>A financial breakdown letter itemizing all your expenses in one column, and showing the income in another column to help you make the case for insufficient funding<\/li>\n<li>Once you have prepared all the items listed above, make a complete copy of the application for your records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Step Four:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Mail your application and supporting documents to USCIS Chicago Lockbox:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>For U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Deliveries: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">USCIS<br \/>\nAttn: I-765 C03<br \/>\nP.O. Box 805373<br \/>\nChicago, IL 60680-5374<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>For Express mail &amp; courier deliveries:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">USCIS<br \/>\nAttn: I-765 C03 (Box 805373)<br \/>\n131 South Dearborn &#8211; 3rd Floor<br \/>\nChicago, IL 60603-5517<\/p>\n<p>Within a few weeks of mailing your application, USCIS will mail you a receipt notification. The receipt and final decision will be sent to the address you wrote on USCIS Form I-765. Please note that USCIS processing usually takes 30-60 days and may take up to 90 days. You may not begin employment before you receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Working prior to authorization to do so constitutes illegal employment that renders you illegally present in the U.S.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conditions and Restrictions of Employment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If USCIS authorizes your hardship employment application, you will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS granting you permission to work Off-Campus. Typically, permission is granted for one (1) year or for the remainder of your academic program, whichever period is less.<\/p>\n<p>Please also note the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You may work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full-time during vacation periods.<\/li>\n<li>You may work in any job,\u00a0<em>related or not related<\/em>\u00a0to your studies.<\/li>\n<li>You may not start employment until you have received an EAD or before the start date indicated on the EAD.<\/li>\n<li>Hardship employment does not count towards your ability to work on-campus or affect your eligibility for practical training.<\/li>\n<li>If you transfer to another institution, your EAD becomes invalid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eligibility To be eligible for Severe Economic Hardship employment authorization, immigration regulations require that you meet the following conditions: You must be a full-time student in good standing and have been in valid F-1 status for at least one full academic year (two consecutive semesters).
