padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><a class=\"standard-button\" href=\"#elig\">Eligibility<\/a> <a class=\"standard-button\" href=\"#rr\">Rules &amp; Regulations<\/a> <a class=\"standard-button\" href=\"#apply\">Apply<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/strong> is a type of authorization that may be granted to F-1 students whose training is \u201can integral part of an established curriculum\u201d and &#8220;directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study\u201d such as an<strong> internship <\/strong>requirement\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/ilink\/docView\/SLB\/HTML\/SLB\/0-0-0-1\/0-0-0-11261\/0-0-0-17197\/0-0-0-17636.html\">Federal Regulation 8CFR 214.2(f)(10)<\/a>].<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT authorization is <strong>required for students in Marymount&#8217;s internship and practicum courses.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Contact ISSS to find out if your <strong>internship, externship, practicum, student teaching, clinical, or volunteer work<\/strong> requires CPT approval.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Students may not start work until they have received CPT authorization <em>and<\/em> it is on or after the date listed on page 2 of the I-20.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Working (<em>paid<\/em> or <em>unpaid<\/em>) without proper authorization may affect your legal status, immediately or in the future.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"elig\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Student Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">To be eligible for CPT authorization, students must meet <em>all<\/em> of the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The student must have been in lawful nonimmigrant status and enrolled\u00a0full-time for at least one academic year\u00a0(unless there is a graduate degree training requirement during the first year of enrollment);\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The student must currently be in\u00a0F-1 status and have completed at least one\u00a0semester at Marymount in F-1 status;\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The training program must be a\u00a0requirement and an integral part of the student&#8217;s degree program and must be reflected\u00a0as a course appearing on their academic transcript;\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The student must be making good academic progress toward degree completion and be eligible to graduate or be eligible to enroll in the next semester; <em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The student must be enrolled for a full course of study while engaging in CPT during required academic term (fall, spring, and summer, if summer is the last term of the student&#8217;s program) unless authorized for a Reduced Course Load;\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>The student must attend a <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/marymount-global\/international-student-services\/acculturation-programs-events\/\">mandatory CPT workshop<\/a> within 6 months prior to requesting CPT authorization.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Position Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">To be considered for CPT authorization, a training opportunity must meet all of the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The student will be supervised by an expert who can serve as a mentor for the student\u2019s learning and training experience;\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The position is directly related to the student\u2019s\u00a0<em>major<\/em>\u00a0field of study and commensurate with the student\u2019s level of study;\u00a0<em>and<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The experience provides training that will allow the student to apply concepts learned in his\/her degree program in a practical setting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"rr\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>CPT Rules &amp; Regulations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>CPT Endorsement<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">International students on F-1 visas may\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> start participating in their internship until they have received CPT authorization on their I-20 and it is <strong>on or after<\/strong>\u00a0the date listed on page 2 of the I-20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>If you begin work before receiving CPT authorization on your I-20 or before the date listed on page 2 of that I-20, you will be in violation of F-1 regulations and at risk of losing F-1 status in the U.S., immediately or in the future.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Part-Time and Full-Time Hours<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">During academic semesters (fall, spring, and summer, if summer is the last term of study), only part-time CPT is permitted. There is an exception possible if the course requires full-time CPT authorization, as stated in the Marymount University catalog. If full-time CPT is a requirement, students must <em>submit proof from the catalog<\/em> when submitting their CPT application through the ISSS portal. Hours:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Part-time CPT: 20 hours per week or fewer<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Full-time CPT: <em>more than<\/em> 20 hours per week (minimum 21 hours per week)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: Students may participate in both On-Campus Employment and CPT simultaneously. CPT is classified as <strong>Practical Training<\/strong>, not Employment, and is directly fulfilling an\u00a0<em>academic course requirement<\/em> and may be a paid or unpaid position. Students should follow the limitation of hours for CPT and On-Campus Employment separately, not combined. For example, a student may be authorized in the Spring semester to participate in 20 hours of On-Campus Employment and 20 hours of CPT.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT authorization is required if the internship will be held on-campus and the student has another on-campus job.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Authorization Dates<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">At Marymount University, CPT is tied to course registration. Therefore CPT authorization aligns with the <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/registrar-s-office\/academic-calendar\/\">Marymount University academic calendar<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Students typically begin CPT on or after the first day of classes for the semester\/term. In accordance with some academic course requirements, some students may be authorized to begin CPT as early as the day after grades are due in the previous semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT authorization typically ends on or before the final date grades are due for the semester\/term. Most academic courses require that CPT end no later than the final date grades are due for the semester\/term. CPT authorization must end no later than the day before classes begin for the next semester\/term. <strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <em>If it is the student&#8217;s final semester of study<\/em>, CPT authorization must end no later than the date final grades are due for the final semester. If summer is the final semester of study, CPT authorization will end on the date grades are due in the final session (I, II, or III) of enrollment (see table below).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT dates cannot exceed dates provided on the employment offer or placement letter, but may be less than the period stated on the offer or placement letter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Important CPT dates and deadlines for current and upcoming semesters:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"table-responsive\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">There are no hard deadlines to apply for CPT.\u00a0 However, since CPT requires you to be enrolled in an internship course, your window to apply begins when your enrollment window opens for the semester, and it ends when enrollment for the semester ends.\u00a0 Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/registrar-s-office\/academic-calendar\/\">Marymount University calendar<\/a> to find the deadline to enroll for each semester.\u00a0 To make sure your I-20 is processed before your internship begins, we recommend you submit your CPT I-20 request to ISSS at least two weeks before the semester begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Do not start work before the CPT authorized start date on your I-20.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">* In exceptional circumstances, an extension to the CPT application deadline may be possible under certain conditions. Contact an ISSS Advisor to discuss your situation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">**<em>If it is the student&#8217;s final semester of study<\/em>, CPT authorization must end no later than the date final grades are due for the final semester. <em>I<\/em>f summer is your final semester of study, CPT authorization will end on the date grades are due in the final session (I, II, or III) of enrollment (June 23, August 4, or August 4, respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Course Enrollment<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT authorization is contingent on enrollment in a Marymount University internship, practicum, and student teaching (and, sometimes, clinical) course. <strong>Important:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Students cannot withdraw from the course and continue with CPT authorization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Do not drop the associated course if you already started CPT work. You must remain enrolled in the course once you have started CPT work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Students may change to a different practical training experience only after obtaining new CPT approval for the new position. Do not change CPT jobs without prior, specific approval for the new job on your I-20.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>All F-1 undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled in a credit-bearing internship course\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0requesting CPT authorization<\/strong>, meaning enrollment must be in an internship course for at least 1 credit. Exception: BILT graduate students should contact their academic advisor for guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>If a student withdraws from the course<\/strong>, they may be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In violation of their F-1 status<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">At risk of a Marymount University Honor Code violation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">At risk of having their CPT authorization cancelled<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Changing CPT Authorization<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">CPT is job\/position and date specific. This means that students are only authorized to work for the specific employer during the specific dates listed on Page 2 of their CPT authorized I-20.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If a student must change their employer for any reason during the time of their CPT authorization, they must contact ISSS immediately\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0starting any new employment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Once a CPT request is submitted, it is considered final.\u00a0 If a student needs to make updates to their request, they must contact ISSS immediately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If a student wishes to extend their CPT authorization, a new CPT request must be submitted in the ISSS portal and must adhere to the dates listed in the table above.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"apply\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Application Procedures<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There are different ways to obtain an internship and register for an internship course based on your education level and major area of study. However, the general process for CPT authorization remains the same for everyone:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>All students:<\/strong>\u00a0Allow up to 10 business days for ISSS to review and process your request.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Do not begin work until you have the CPT authorized I-20. <\/strong>If you have questions, contact ISSS at 703-526-6922 or isss@marymount.edu.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Step 1: Meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss your Academic Plan. <\/b>Students must be familiar with their degree plan and meet with their advisor to identify any internship course in their specific program of study. Students will work with their academic advisor to determine when the student will be eligible to register for that course throughout their degree so that they can start planning the search for the internship.\u00a0 It is important to always\u00a0<strong>plan ahead for CPT<\/strong>!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Step 2: Find an internship and receive an Offer Letter. <\/strong>Finding an internship opportunity can be done in various ways.\u00a0 Depending on your program, you may be placed in a position by your department or you may need to work with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/center-for-career-development\/students\/internships\/\">Career Development<\/a> to find your internship through Handshake.\u00a0 All students are required to have an Offer Letter or a Letter of Placement from their Department<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Requirements for an Offer Letter or Placement Letter:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">On company letterhead<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">States Name of Employer and Employer Address where student will be working<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">States start date and end date<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">States number of hour to be worked per week<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">&#8220;Wet&#8221; signature from authorized representative of the Employer (or Academic Department, if a Department Placement Letter)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Step 3: Register for an Internship\/Experiential Learning Course. <\/strong>You may be required to work with another Marymount office to be enrolled in the internship course:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Undergraduate students working with Career Development: Complete\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/academics\/services-resources\/center-for-career-development\/students\/for-credit-internship\/for-credit-internships\/\">the steps with Career Development<\/a>\u00a0required for you to register for the internship course.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Undergraduate students\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>working with Career Development: Work with your department to ensure internship course registration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Graduate students: Work with your academic advisor to ensure internship course registration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Step 4: Submit the CPT\/Internship Request in the ISSS Portal. <\/strong>After students are registered for the internship class, they must report this\u00a0internship to the ISSS office via the\u00a0ISSS portal.\u00a0This reporting is required\u00a0in order to get immigration\u00a0approval for internship work\u00a0and to be issued an updated I-20 with CPT authorized. <strong>Students must report their internship to ISSS and receive a new I-20 authorized for CPT regardless of if the internship is paid or unpaid.<\/strong>\u00a0Students must have an I-20 issued to them before they start their internship to be in compliance with labor and immigration regulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>To report the internship:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Log into the ISSS portal and proceed to Tab 4.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Click on the briefcase icon titled Internship\/CPT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Complete the Internship\/CPT request online form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Upload proof of employment.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If you are working with Career Development, Proof of Employment is the Handshake-Approved Job Details Page<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Go to Handshake<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Click on the job details tab of your internship<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Save it as a PDF<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Upload the PDF<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If you are not working with Career Development, Proof of Employment is an Offer Letter or Placement from your department<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Add your <em>academic<\/em> advisor OR your Academic Internship Mentor&#8217;s (AIM) name and email address as your Approver. Your academic advisor OR your AIM must approve to confirm that your internship is related to your academic degree program and that you are registered for the correct internship course.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Click Submit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">After clicking Submit, the academic advisor or AIM will receive an email to ask them to complete their portion of the CPT online form. Once the academic advisor or AIM confirms that the experience is related to the student&#8217;s degree major, the request automatically forwards to an ISSS advisor for review and processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Step 5: ISSS reviews your request and issues your CPT I-20. <\/strong>ISSS will review the request. If the request for CPT is approved, ISSS will update the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and generate an updated I-20 indicating approval for CPT. The student will be notified of the approval and the I-20 will be uploaded to the ISSS portal for the student to access and download.
