In her pieces, Martha uses materials, techniques, and designs that are period authentic to early 19th century Cherokee beadwork. The Cherokee Nation has designated Martha a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cherokee National Treasure<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cherokee Nation Honored Elder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for her work in preserving Cherokee customs and heritage. Her piece on display in MU\u2019s library is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kamama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which means \u201cbutterfly\u201d in Cherokee. She uses themes of balance, harmony, and nature in her work, along with vibrant colors, to celebrate the enduring wisdom of Indigenous communities.
