Sometimes individuals who are in the U.S. under another visa category need to request a change of status to F-1. Reasons for the need to change may include that your current status does not allow you to study in the U.S. (full-time or part-time) or the validity of your current visa will end before you complete your degree program.

Please check the chart below for common visa categories and eligibility for study in the U.S. Complete information is found on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement document named Nonimmigrants: Who Can Study?

Note: ISSS offers limited support to prospective and continuing students who plan to change their status from another category to F-1 status. Meet with an ISSS advisor if you have questions about requesting an Initial I-20 or Change of Status I-20. Each person’s situation is unique.
