At Marymount University, we believe very strongly in developing students\u2019 understanding of their place in the larger global community and of how the global context in which we live and work affects our day-to-day existence at the local level.\u00a0 All of our departments have created innovative study-abroad programs in a variety of formats that allow students to explore the world, develop cultural awareness, learn more about themselves, and apply their course content in a very different environment.\u00a0 Additionally, through the Center for Global Education, students can apply for study-abroad programs that are run through other institutions; the opportunities are endless!\u00a0\u00a0Click here\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/a>for more information about our global initiatives.<\/p>\n

A Sampling of our Offerings Abroad:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Criminal Justice:\u00a0<\/strong>
\nCJ 209 \u201cThe Criminal Justice System\u201d \u2013 spring break study tour to the\u00a0Netherlands<\/strong>\u00a0to explore comparative justice systems; CJ 314 \u201cPrinciples of Criminal Investigations\u201d \u2013 spring break study tour to\u00a0Liverpool, England<\/strong>.\u00a0 Additionally, in CJ 313 \u201cRecognition and Recovery of Human Remains\u201d has a spring break component in\u00a0Suffolk County, VA,<\/strong>\u00a0where students work with law enforcement professionals to learn how to engage in grave exhumation.<\/p>\n

Counseling:<\/strong>
\nStudents often travel with faculty members to present at the European Branch of the American Counseling Association and, in the process, engage in service and learning opportunities under faculty direction.\u00a0 Recent trips have been based in\u00a0Germany and Italy<\/strong>, and the possibility of going to\u00a0Ireland<\/strong>\u00a0is being explored.\u00a0 Additionally, students may take advantage of courses offered through the Forensic and Legal Psychology Department or the Education Department.<\/p>\n

Education:\u00a0<\/strong>
\nQualified students may complete half of their student teaching semester in\u00a0Rome, Italy, New Zealand, or Uganda<\/strong>.\u00a0 Students at both the undergraduate and graduate level have opportunities to complete summer field-based courses in literacy or special education in locations from\u00a0Costa Rica to Panama\u00a0<\/strong>through ED 540 \u201cEducation Global Service Learning.\u201d\u00a0 ED 526 \u201cCross-Cultural\/International Curricula\u201d can include a field experience component in\u00a0Uganda<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with the Arlington Academy of Hope, and ED 550 \u201cResearch Methodology\u201d often runs with a Ugandan-based field component, again through partnership with Arlington Academy of Hope. \u00a0For more information on student teaching abroad,\u00a0

Forensic and Legal Psychology:\u00a0<\/strong>
\nFLP 566 \u201cChild Victimization\u201d \u2013 this course is often offered on-site in a country in which specific groups of children experience intense victimization (most recently, the course ran in\u00a0Prague<\/strong>\u00a0and explored the experience of Roma children); FLP 533 \u201cPsychology of Sexual Violence and Exploitation\u201d \u2013 this course is often offered on-site in a country in which sexual exploitation is particularly problematic (most recently, the course ran in\u00a0Cambodia<\/strong>).\u00a0 Every other year, FL 598 \u201cForensic and Legal Psychology Special Topics\u201d runs in\u00a0London<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with London Metropolitan Institute; in the off years, students from LMI come to Marymount.<\/p>\n

Psychology:\u00a0<\/strong>
\nPSY 496 \u201cSpecial Topics in Psychology: Primate Field Experience\u201d \u2013 This summer study abroad program in\u00a0Spain<\/strong>\u00a0focuses on integrating research and service in a global setting. Participants work with international students, scientists, and caregivers\u00a0at a primate sanctuary to learn about what is being done to rehabilitate physically abused and psychologically traumatized chimpanzees and monkeys<\/p>\n
