\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cGhost Count\u201d<\/span> Cody Gallery, Marymount University January 17 – February 26 \u201cGhost Count\u201d is a solo exhibition at Cody Gallery by artist and educator, Amanda Burnham.<\/p>\n In magic, a \u201cghost count\u201d is the name of a technique for hiding a particular card. Much like a Burnham makes drawings and large, site specific installations which are also drawings. The Burnham\u2019s work has been exhibited widely. Selected venues include the Berman Museum <\/p>\n

\ncard trick, the works in \u201cGhost Count\u201d rely on misdirection: competing fragmentary images
\nmuscle to the surface, at times cancelling each other out, distracting from, or defying their
\nsublimated narratives. Exuberant, manic line and color mask darker undercurrents.<\/p>\n
\nformer ink and water media works often begin as anecdotal moments either recorded or
\nobserved from life, and frequently evolve to enfold idiosyncratic personal iconography that
\nemphasizes the darkly comic and absurd. The latter are motivated by similar concerns, typically
\ncomposed of hundreds of quick, gestural acrylic and flashe paint sketches made with a fat brush
\nthat are then cut and collaged onto both built armatures and the existing surfaces of a space.
\nThe installations are sometimes further animated with embedded lighting. The effect is
\nsomewhere between a comic book and a stage set.<\/p>\n

\nMuseum (DC), the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (CT), the Toledo Museum of Art
\n(OH), the Gershman Gallery (Philadelphia), Volta (Basel, Switzerland), Marianne Boesky
\nGallery (NYC), Benrimon Contemporary (NYC), and Dorsch Gallery (Miami). Among
\nnumerous honors, she is a four time recipient of Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland
\nState Art Council, and a Rubys Grant recipient. Selected residencies include the Embassy of
\nForeign Artists (Geneva, Switzerland), the Swatch Art Peace Hotel (Shanghai, China), and
\nPaper Machine (New Orleans, LA). Her artist book \u201cQuorum Call\u201d was published by Antenna
\nin 2018; a self-published artist book, \u201cRage Faces\u201d, is part of the permanent collections of the
\nNational Museum of Women in the Arts and the New York Public Library. Burnham holds a
\nBachelor of Arts in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University and a Master
\nof Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale University School of Art.<\/p>\n
