CALL FOR VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION PROPOSALS 
Cody Gallery at Marymount University in Partnership with Arlington Arts
Exhibition for Fall 2019

ALL PROPOSALS DUE May 15, 2019 
Notifications to participants by June 15, 2019

 

DESCRIPTION: Cody Gallery in partnership with Arlington Arts is inviting artists to submit proposals for a contemporary art exhibition for Fall 2019.  Up to three artists will be selected to exhibit their artwork from September 7 to October 26 2019. The Gallery opened its brand new 800 square foot space in September 2017. Cody Gallery at Marymount University is located at Ballston Center, 1000 North Glebe Road, 2nd Floor, Arlington, VA. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday 12pm-5pm and by appointment. More information may be found on marymount.edu/codygallery.

ELIGIBILITY: Proposals will be accepted from individual artists who live, work, study or maintain a studio in Arlington County, Virginia.

AWARDS: One $500 honorarium will be awarded for each selected proposal.

ENTRY FEE: No fee per proposal.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: May 15, 2019

PROPOSALS: Proposals may include solo exhibitions by Arlington artists. Media may include photography, hand-pulled prints, letterpress, sculptural installations, crafts, textiles, drawing, painting, etc. All proposals must be submitted via https://arlington.slideroom.com/. Only electronic submissions will be judged. Applicants are encouraged to visit the gallery for a site visit. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 12-5pm and by appointment. To complete the application participants must create an account (free to sign up) and submit the following:

  • Project proposal with exhibition description in 350 words or less.
  • Curatorial or artist statement in 250 words or less.
  • Description of final presentation, process for display and details on how work will be framed (ie, black wood frame, glass, white acid free mattes, etc) in 350 words or less.
  • Describe any educational programs for Marymount University that would compliment the participants’ exhibition in 250 words or less. Possible educational programs may or may not include lectures, artist talks, hands on workshops, etc.
  • Resume(s) or bio(s) of artist(s) or curator(s) in 2,500 words or less.
  • 10 images of completed artwork proposed for exhibition.
  • Media details should include title, description, artist’s name, image size (h” x w” x d”), medium, retail value (indicate if Not For Sale NFS), and year created. For insurance purposes, a price or value must be determined for ALL items.
  • All work must have been created within the last five years.
  • Artworks intended for exhibition –that are still in progress during proposal submission–should be described in detail. If necessary, upload a PDF to your online application with any additional information.

CONDITIONS: By submitting a proposal, each participant, if selected, agrees to the conditions below.

APPLICATION:

  • Participants may apply with the understanding that jurors may give preference to participants who have not previously exhibited at Cody Gallery.
  • Exhibits selected by the jurors must be installed as described.
  • The artist can propose to create a new body of work for exhibition in the Cody Gallery. The artist must submit a description of the proposed work, and samples of previously created work for quality review.
  • Participants may not change their exhibit between selection and exhibition.
  • If the exhibit is not as proposed originally, Cody Gallery has the right to cancel the exhibition and the honorarium would be forfeited.
  • Unless the proposal is for a curated exhibit of more than one photographer, all submitted photographs must be of original material taken by the applicant. By submitting this proposal, each artist acknowledges that the submitted photographs are original works created by the artist, that the photography does not infringe on any copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has a right, title, claim or interest in the photography.
  • The artist must be the sole author and owner of the copyright of all artwork entered, or if work is copied from a photograph or other image that is not the artist’s own, the artist must have permission in writing from the copyright owner to use his or her work. Source material and proof of permission to use must be made available upon request by the jurors, Marymount University staff or Arlington County staff at any time up to and during the exhibition dates.
  • Arlington County and Marymount University accepts no liability for the exhibition of unlawfully reproduced art.
  • Participant agrees to not schedule an exhibition of the same body of artwork within 60 miles of Arlington for 90 days before or after their exhibition at Cody Gallery.  Participant also agrees to not use the same or similar promotional images used for Cody Gallery for any other show within the time frame above without permission.

​NOTIFICATION:

  • Proposals will be reviewed and juried May 15 to June 10, 2019.
  • The applicant will receive an e-mail notification on the status of his/her application by June 15, 2015.
  • Once a show is selected, the applicant/participant and gallery staff will coordinate exhibition, opening reception, artwork drop off, installation, de-installation and pickup dates and times.
  • Participant will receive and sign an agreement with Cody Gallery stating the dates and exhibition terms.
  • Cody Gallery reserves the right to adjust the times or dates of an exhibition, delivery, installation, and de-installation in the event of programming conflicts.

SELECTED PARTICIPANTS 

  • The participant will receive an honorarium of $500 within two weeks of the opening of the exhibit issued by Marymount University.
  • Participants must furnish a W-9 for payment purposes.
  • Cody Gallery will provide a public reception with refreshments and a conversation with the participant conducted by the curator or juror.  Reception dates will be determined by the gallery (receptions are typically on a Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00pm).
  • During the exhibition period, participating artists will do an artist talk or workshop that is open to Marymount University students.
  • Cody Gallery will provide limited promotion of each exhibition via website, email and social media.
  • Cody Gallery encourages Artists to discuss outreach collaboration with Cody Gallery and Arlington Arts and promotion of the exhibition.
  • Cody Gallery will provide printed exhibition cards.
  • Any additional printed promotional material by the selected participant must be self-produced and the participant is responsible for printing, mailing and associated costs. ALL promotional materials (to include printed material, social media and press outreach) are subject to review by Cody Gallery and Arlington Arts.
  • Selected participants are responsible for delivering artwork, working with Cody Gallery staff to install the artwork, self-promoting the exhibit, hosting the opening reception, de-installing and picking up of the artwork at the conclusion of the exhibition.
  • Permission to photograph and reproduce any work submitted to the exhibition for publicity purposes is considered granted unless otherwise stated in writing.
  • Cody Gallery cannot de-install exhibits and store artwork for a later pickup; artwork must be picked up on the day of de-installation.

GALLERY INSTALLATION DETAILS:  

  • Please email mkent@marymount.edu if you wish to receive a copy of the gallery floorplan.
  • The gallery is 800 square feet.
  • The walls measure 30 feet long with a variable viewing width between 5-18 feet.
  • There is floor space is and 3-D work may be possible. Floor is concrete.
  • Exhibitions will be professionally lit.
  • All artworks are insured.  All artwork will be insured on premises as long as a list of Artwork titles, descriptions and values is presented before work is delivered and photographed on site.  Artwork is not insured while on delivery to and from the Cody Gallery.  The Cody Gallery shall not be held responsible for damage caused by fires or natural disasters beyond the control of Marymount University.
  • In the event of damage or theft, the artist may be required to provide documentation that substantiates the value of the artwork. This can include appraisals or records of sale of similar work.
  • All work will need to be photographed upon delivery to ensure the condition of the artworks.
  • Price sheet will be provided by the Cody Gallery staff.  Information used and shared will be collected from the proposal. Participant is responsible to notify staff of any changes four weeks prior to the installation. Price sheet must be submitted to gallery staff at least one week in advance of installation.

DELIVERY OF ARTWORK: 

  • Participants are required to deliver and assist in the installation of artwork.
  • As previously mentioned, all installations and de-installations occur within 7 days from the opening reception and closing date.
  • All work should be in stable condition, wired and ready for display. Participants are responsible for providing additional supplies necessary for installation.
  • The participant must meet with staff two months prior to the show to discussion installation requirements.
  • Garage and street parking is available at Cody Gallery. Participant is responsible for paying for parking.
  • Cody Gallery will be available to assist and address concerns and/or questions.

DE-INSTALLATION/PICK-UP OF ARTWORK: 

  • Pick up of artwork after the exhibit closes is the sole responsibility of the selected artists.
  • Artwork must be picked up within one week following the close of the exhibition. Date and time will be identified in the contract.

SALE OF ARTWORKS

  • Cody Gallery takes a 30% commission on all artwork sold (participant receives 70% of sale).
  • At the end of the exhibition, an additional payment for any sold artwork will be mailed directly to the selected participant at the address listed on the W-9 by Marymount University.
  • The participant will receive a 1099 from Marymount University for income tax reporting.
  • No work sold or unsold may be removed from the exhibition before the close of the exhibition.
  • If a transaction is conducted with the participant by commission of sale of work after the show is finished, and it is the direct result of having contributed to exhibiting at Cody Gallery, it is expected that the Cody Gallery will receive a commission, with a reasonable time of two-three months.

JURORS:
Meaghan Kent is the Director of Cody Gallery at Marymount University. She is also the Founder and Director of Site95. Kent has been a gallery director for the past fifteen years where she managed the careers of internationally emerging and established artists and coordinated exhibitions locally and worldwide. She was previously based in Guadalajara, Mexico where she founded Páramo. Prior to Páramo, she worked at Casey Kaplan, Andrea Rosen Gallery, and I-20. Recent curated projects include: “Border (Untitled)” (with Joe Hicks and Sarah Hardesty) and “That’s Why I’m Here” at Marymount University. With Site95 she curated the “Dead in August” a multivenue series in New York, “P2V: P. Scott Cunningham and Antoine Lefebvre” at Dimensions Variable, Miami, “Trombly Rodriguez: The Fabric of a Space” at the Abrons Arts Center, New York, “Urban Interactions” at the Hillyer Art Space, Washington DC, and outdoor public commissions in Miami, Florida with Patrick McDonough and Sam Trioli. In addition, Kent co-organized “PaintersNYC” with Maureen Cavanaugh at El Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueńos in Oaxaca, Mexico. Kent completed her MA in art history at George Washington University, Washington, DC and her BA at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was a participant of Independent Curators International (ICI) Intensive in 2012. Kent has written for several publications including: “ArtHaps” and “Art in America”.

Cynthia Connolly joined Arlington Cultural Affairs Division in 2003 as Curator for the County-run Ellipse Arts Center Gallery in Ballston. In 2010, Connolly became Visual Arts Curator of Artisphere where she curated over 14 exhibits a year to national and international acclaim. Ongoing projects from this period include Art on the ART Bus, an Arlington Transit bus containing rotating exhibits of original work by regional artists. In 2018, she launched the Arlington Art Truck with a National Endowment for the Arts grant, amongst others. She is a photographer, letterpress printer, curator and artist whose work is shown internationally.  She exhibited in Beautiful Losers establishing herself as a pioneer in DIY culture and was reviewed extensively, including Art in America. Her photography is in many private collections as well as the J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian Museum of American History, National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Corcoran Gallery of Art from which she holds a degree.

Dawne Langford is a Washington, DC-based independent curator, documentary filmmaker, and artist. She recently completed a six month project as the director and curator for the Fundred Reserve OPEN LAB, in collaboration with Mel Chin Studios. After many years working in public media as a broadcast TV editor, she transitioned to producing, working on independent documentaries Check It, Kandahar Journals, and Finding Joseph I. Langford also launched a curatorial initiative dedicated to centering traditionally marginalized viewpoints in public discourse around artistic creation. Currently, she is working in collaboration with Georgetown University on a documentary project, working on an art publication with Provisions Library For Social Justice and serving as DCAC’s 2019 Curatorial Mentor. Previous exhibition venues and collaborations include Mel Chin Studios, Transformer, SPRING/BREAK, Olly Olly, Washington Project for the Arts,Torpedo Factory, George Mason University and The Smithsonian Asian Pacific Center’s Culture Lab series, Crosslines.
