Horizons Design + Art Competition

The Horizons Design + Art Competition has four categories that reflect the range of degree opportunities at Marymount University’s School of Design + Art. Open to regional undergraduate students, this juried competition seeks original creative work in the following categories: Art, Fashion Design, Graphic and Media Design, and Interior Design & Architecture. The competition is organized by the School of Design + Art at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.

Jury

Competition entries are juried by established artists and designers with professional expertise related to each category. Read more about this year’s jury members here.

Eligibility

This competition is open to students that are currently enrolled at a regional community college, college, or university in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC. Students transferring to Marymount University in the Summer 2021 or Fall 2021 semester are also eligible. Current Marymount students are not eligible to participate in this competition.

Prize Categories

Prizes will be awarded for each competition category.

  • First Place: $100
  • Second Place: $50
  • Honorable Mention: $25

Student competition winners who transfer to Marymount University in the Fall 2021 semester are eligible for a one-time School of Design + Art transfer scholarship. This SoDA transfer scholarship is in addition to any merit-based scholarships awarded by Marymount University.

Deadlines and Notifications

EXTENDED: MAR 21, 2021: Submission Deadline
All submissions will be done electronically, no hard copy submissions will be accepted. To enter a project into this competition, you will need to prepare and submit your work here.

MAR 26, 2021: Exhibit Selection Announced
Participants will be notified of selections for exhibition via email by

APR 9, 2021: Virtual Opening Reception
The reception will be held via Zoom. Time to be announced.

Fine Art Submission Requirements

2D/3D work

  • Submit 1-3 original works of art. Up to 2 additional images per work is allowed to show detail or multiple views for 3D work
  • Images must be ready to publish online
  • Images must be clear, cropped, and properly formatted.
  • Files must be in jpeg format up to 5 MB in size
  • File Name: ID + Last Name + First Name + 01 (ART_Last_First_01.jpeg; ART_Last_First_02.jpeg)

Video

  • Video files can be either MP4, MOV, or GIF format
  • Provide still image of video as a jpeg up to 5 MB
  • File Name: ID + Last Name + First Name + 01 (ART_Last_First_01.mp4; ART_Last_First_02.mp4)

Fashion Design Submission Requirements

Submission Media

  • Fashion illustrations on paper using media of your choice such as colored pencil, marker or water color
  • Fashion illustrations using a digital application
  • Apparel and accessory design using fashion fabrics
  • Apparel and accessory design using unconventional materials

File Requirements

  • Files must be in jpeg format up to 5 MB in size
  • Garment Submissions: up to 3 images per garment
  • File Name: FD + Last Name + First Name + 01 (FD_Last_First_01.jpeg; FD_Last_First_02.jpeg)

Graphic + Media Design Submission Requirements

Please submit 1 – 3 designs:

  • Graphic designs including logo design with/without letterhead, symbols/icons, illustrations, posters, advertisements, social media, packaging, publication covers and page layouts, self promotion, public service announcements
  • Websites and interactive media
  • Animations, motion graphics, social media, and nonfiction videos either MP4, MOV, GIF

  • Requirements for Design Submissions
    • Files must be in pdf format up to 5 MB in size; actual size
    • File Name: GMD + Last Name + First Name + 01 (GMD_Last_First_01.pdf; GMD_Last_First_02.pdf)
  • Requirements for Video/Animations/Motion Graphics Submissions
    • Video files can be either MP4, MOV, or GIF format
    • File Name: GMD + Last Name + First Name + 01 (GMD_Last_First_01.mp4/mov/gif; GMD_Last_First_02.mp4/mov/gif)
  • Requirements for Webpage Submissions
    • Provide link in the text box

Interior Design & Architecture Submission Requirements

Please submit two (2) 24” x 36” digital presentation boards in PDF format with a file size between 3MB and 10MB and containing at least four the following drawing types:

  • Dimensioned floor plan, drawn to scale
  • Furniture and materials plan (may be combined with dimensioned floor plan)
  • Reflected ceiling plan, drawn to scale
  • Renderings of the completed space
  • Additional drawings of the space, which can be elevation, perspective, isometric, axonometric, or orthographic.
  • Additional elements to convey the overall concept including, but not limited to, furniture and fixture specifications, color palettes, wall sections, electrical plans, schedules, additional renderings, etc.

Submission File Requirements

  • Files must be in PDF format between 3 MB – 10 MB
  • File Name: ID + Last Name + First Name + board (ID_Last_First_board-01.pdf)

Competition Rules

  1. Deadline for Submission: The deadline for final entry submission is March 15, 11:59pm EST
  2. Number of Submissions: Participants may only submit once, and the submission can include up to three different creative works. Participants can submit to different categories, but can only submit up to 3 total creative works to the entire competition.
  3. Submission Requirements: Accepted work must meet the category requirements listed in the Submission Guidelines
  4. Submission Format: All submissions must be submitted electronically via the application form.
  5. Proof of Eligibility: Participants must be an undergraduate student in a college, university, or community college in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC. Students transferring to Marymount University in the Summer 2021 or Fall 2021 semester are also eligible.
  6. Loan Agreement: All participants must complete “Loan Agreement” in the Submission Form. Any participant under the age of 18 must have Parental or Legal Guardian permission to participate.
