Scholarship Program Creates Global Citizens
Ashley Phillips ’12, a Communication and Fashion Merchandising double major from Newport News, VA, is the first recipient of the Scholarship for Global Engagement, a new scholarship that pays full tuition for one semester for an undergraduate student to study abroad.
Ashley will be studying at the University of Jordan in Amman in fall 2010. She will take an Arabic language class, a religion course on Islam, Women’s Literature, History of Jordan, and other courses. She will live with a local family.
Victor Betancourt, director of Marymount’s Center for Global Education, says, “This scholarship is meant to encourage students to explore interesting countries and cultures, become aware of themselves as global citizens, and serve as a link with Marymount while abroad and when they return.”
The program is available only for the fall semester, and the location where the scholarship will be applied changes. In fall 2011, the recipient will travel to South Africa; in fall 2012, the destination will be El Salvador.
