The Most Reverend Paul S. Loverde, Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, celebrated Marymount University’s Mass of the Holy Spirit on September 5, with concelebrants Father David Sharland, Y.A., director of Campus Ministry, and Father Jack Peterson, Y.A., assistant director of Campus Ministry. A time-honored tradition at Marymount, the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit unites the campus community in prayer and reflection at the beginning of each academic year.
Marymount President Matthew D. Shank gave the welcome and thanked the Bishop for celebrating this special Mass and for his “support, blessings, prayers, and friendship.” Dr. Shank said that “the Mass of the Holy Spirit brings everyone together to pray for a productive, safe, and peaceful academic year, and to ask for God’s guidance.”
In his homily, Bishop Loverde spoke of Pope Benedict XVI’s call for a Year of Faith, which will begin this October 11 and end November 24, 2013. He explained that it will be a time for “renewed conversion to the Lord and deepened reflection.” The Bishop added, “As we seek to be more deeply rooted in our faith, we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Throughout the year, this university community will experience the call to pass through the door of faith. …Let your faith mature through your studies, sports, music, and art. And let it be an inspiration to those around you.”
Bishop Loverde concluded by noting, “It is always a joy for me to be here. I have an honorary doctorate from Marymount, so I am part of the family!”
