Women’s Swimming Edged by St. Mary’s
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s swimming team was edged by narrowest of margins, 103-101, by visiting St. Mary’s (Md.) in its season-opening Capital Athletic Conference meet on Saturday afternoon. The Saints won both relays and five individual events on the day.
Opening the meet with a victory, the team of Taylor Hood, Jessica Hester, Bridget Wunderly and Katie Moran won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.54. Casey Thomas then picked up the next victory with a 2:03.10 showing in the 200 freestyle before Moran and Hood went 1-2, respectively, in the 500 free with times of 25.44 and 26.81.
Newcomer Kassidy Schmidt posted her first top-3 finish of the season in the 200 IM before Wunderly returned to the medal stand with a victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.76. Thomas added another event win with a 55.46 in the 100 freestyle to edge Moran by just .58 of a second for second place, Hood won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.12 with Lauren Funk placing third at 1:06.14 and Hester was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.08.
Closing out the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay, Thomas, Schmidt, Funk and Isabella Blecha posted a 1:49.23 while the Marymount ‘B’ relay team finished just 1.35 seconds away from earning the decisive two points that separated the two squads.
Marymount returns to action next Saturday as it hosts York (Pa.) in CAC competition.
