Men’s Basketball Falls to #12 St. Mary’s (Md.)
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s basketball team fell 74-65 to 12th-ranked St. Mary’s (Md.) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. The Saints cut a late 15-point deficit to just seven but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Senior guard Stephen Simoneau led all scorers with 18 points while junior forward Tarek Ammoury and freshman forward Reed Scott added 10 points each. Scott tied the game-high with seven rebounds while Ammoury led all players with five assists.
A back-and-forth first half saw a combined six ties and lead changes as the Seahawks (10-3, 4-0 CAC) led by as many as seven with a minute to play. Battling back, the Saints (2-11, 0-5 CAC) closed out the frame on a 5-0 run capped by a Karl Nelson three-pointer to go into the break down 31-29.
Keeping things close, Ammoury converted a pair of free throws at the 16:48 mark in the second stanza to knot the game at 34-34. St. Mary’s would take over from there and go on a 16-2 run to take a 14 point lead with just under 10 minutes to play. Pushing their lead to as many as 15 with under two minutes to play, the Seahawks held off a late Marymount rally to close out the game on the free throw line.
James Davenport and Kyle Jarczynski led St. Mary’s with 11 points each, both off the bench.
Marymount returns to the hardwood on Saturday against Hood in CAC action in Frederick, Md.
