Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Swarthmore in Florida

Clearwater, Fla. – Marymount University’s women’s lacrosse team dropped a 16-12 decision to Swarthmore in its Spring Break game on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints fall to 0-2 on the season.

Taylor Johnson and Megan McGuirk led the Saints with three goals each to post consecutive hat-tricks to start their collegiate careers. Tancy Weatherford added a pair while Molly Maher, Chelsea Ritter, Catherine Powell and Lindsay Bullock each scored as well.

McGuirk also chipped in a game-high four assists while Weatherford added two and Johnson chimed in with one.

Maher led the Saints with five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Powell added four draw controls while Kelly Smigen had three ground balls.

In goal, Kiki Niebuhr hauled in 10 saves to go with two ground balls.

Swarthmore (1-0) took the early lead and held control most of the opening half before taking a 10-3 lead into halftime. Marymount battled back in the second, outscoring the Garnet 9-6 in the frame, but couldn’t overcome its early deficit.

Corinne Sommi led the Garnet with six goals. Annalise Penikis added four and Sara Lentricchia had three.

Marymount returns to action this weekend as it plays its first games the new home field at Long Bridge Park. The Saints host Washington & Jefferson on Saturday at 12 p.m. before taking on Sweet Briar on Sunday at 2 p.m.
