Chattanooga, Tenn. – Marymount University’s women’s lacrosse team won its third-straight game to start the 2013 season with a 13-9 victory over Sewanee on Thursday afternoon. The Saints tie a program mark with their 3-0 start to the year, matching the feat from the 2005 campaign.
Marymount’s 45 goals over its first three games sets a program record to begin a season while its 17 goals allowed in that span fall just one goal shy of the school mark as well.
Mary Ellen Whitlock led the Saints with a hat-trick, scoring a game-high three goals to go with an assist for four points. Four other Saints, Molly Maher, Stephanie Flood, Lindsay Bullock and Taylor Johnson, each added a pair of goals.
Chelsea Ritter chipped in a goal and an assist while Stephanie Keane scored a lone goal as well.
Maher led the Blue and White with four caused turnovers and paced all players with seven ground balls.
Kiki Niebuhr (3-0) collected 16 saves in goal to earn her third win of the season.
Sewanee (4-3) led the majority of the first half, scoring first and leading 6-2 with nearly 13 minutes remaining the frame. The Saints wouldn’t allow a goal the rest of the period while Bullock and Maher closed the gap to 6-4 at the break, including Maher’s score with seven seconds remaining.
Coming out of halftime, Marymount opened the stanza with four unanswered goals to take its first lead. The Saints held the Tigers without a goal for over 15 minutes of the frame before Sewanee got back on the scoreboard at the 14:44 mark. With momentum on their side, the Blue and White outscored the Tigers 5-2 the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Molly Arnold, Mallory Grimm and Olivia Vietor led Sewanee with two goals each.
