Men’s Lacrosse Falls in CAC Opener
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s lacrosse team fell to visiting St. Mary’s (Md.)11-5 in its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday night. The Saints snap a three-game winning-streak, drop to 4-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Lance Bernecker led the Saints with two goals and an assist while Connor Kellogg chipped in a goal and an assist. Vince Lodato and George Pugh both added lone goals as well.
Garrett Nealon paced the Blue and White with a pair of assists with Nick Gruber adding another.
A rough first quarter saw the Saints fall behind 5-0 before finding their footing in the middle two frames. Marymount outscored the Seahawks (4-4, 1-0 CAC) a combined 5-2 in the second and third periods to make it a 7-5 game with 15 minutes to play.
In the fourth, St. Mary’s scored early at the 14:10 mark and again with 7:33 remaining to lead 9-5. The Seahawks would then seal the win with a pair of late goals after holding MU scoreless in the stanza.
Marymount controlled the battle of the faceoffs, winning 12-of-19 trips to the center ‘X’. Ian Gordon went 7-for-11, Max Johnson was 3-for-5 and Lodato was 2-for-3.
Gordon led the Saints with five ground balls while Gruber, Michael Bitonti and Sam Dupont each added three. Tyler DaSilva caused three turnovers while Bitonti, Dupont and Max Rowse each added a pair.
In goal, Derek DiGiovanni (4-2) collected 10 saves in the loss.
Ben Love led St. Mary’s with five goals.
