Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s cross country teams gave back to the community by volunteering with Girls on the Run in Northern Virginia. The Girls on the Run program uses interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues to teach girls how to celebrate being girls and to honor their own voices.
Coached and mentored by females after school, the girls train for a celebratory 5K at the end of the school year. Marymount helped staff the 5K as part of their efforts to spread the love of running. The Saints showed their support for the runners by cheering and congratulating them on their accomplishment.
Girls on the Run not only focuses on the girls’ self-esteem but also combats the increasing cases of childhood obesity. According to data collected, 31 percent of Virginia’s children are overweight or obese. Partnering with this program, Marymount cross country joins the battle against obesity and strives to make a difference one runner at a time.
