Women’s Soccer Blanks Trinity
Washington, D.C. – Marymount University’s women’s soccer team shutout Trinity (D.C.) 8-0 on Friday afternoon. The Saints’ eight goals were the most since the season-finale of the 2008 campaign.
Paige Pierson and Katie Hamelin each recorded hat-tricks in the win. Lauren Sanders and Shannon Bisselink rounded out the MU scoring. Bisselink also added three assists while Pierson notched a pair.
The Saints (4-5-0) wasted no time getting on the board as Hamelin took a pass from Pierson through the defense and beat the Tigers’ (3-5-0) keeper far post just 1:55 into the game. Pierson would add her first goal less than four minutes later with a shot from point blank range that careened off the keeper’s hands and into the back of the net.
Bisselink earned her goal in the 16th minute. Waiting on the right wing, she collected a rebound from a Sanders shot that deflected off the crossbar and launched her own shot from 20 yards out for the 3-0 lead.
Sanders added to the scoring barrage 68 seconds later. Taking a pass from Bisselink, she rocketed a shot from just outside of the middle of the box for the Saints’ fourth goal of the half.
Not done scoring, Pierson and Hamelin each tallied another goal before the frame was over. Pierson put her second goal of the game home with an assist by Hamelin in the 21st minute while Hamelin gave Bisselink her third assist with a goal in the 26th minute to put MU up 6-0.
Marymount held back in the second half, giving the reserves quality minutes and using the opportunity to test players at multiple positions.
Closing out their tremendous performances, Hamelin and Pierson both completed their hat-tricks within four minutes of each other. Hamelin achieved the feat first with assist by Pierson while her teammate mirrored her accomplishment by knocking home a rebound shot from Eva DeLeon.
Marymount returns to action on Thursday, October 7, on the road at Shenandoah.
