Women’s Soccer Edged by UMW
Fredericksburg, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s soccer team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference game 3-2 at Mary Washington on Tuesday. The Saints tallied a late second half goal to cut their deficit to one but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Katerina Hamelin paced the Saints (3-5-0, 2-3-0 CAC) with both goals while Paige Pierson added an assist.
Mary Washington (6-2-1, 3-1-0 CAC) took a quick lead with an early goal in the third minute of play. The Eagles added another score less than 20 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead at the 20:53 mark.
Wasting no time, the Saints responded a mere 36 seconds later as Hamelin collected a pass from Pierson to cut the deficit to a lone goal.
The Eagles would add another goal near the end of the frame to make it 3-1.
Battling back, Marymount kept the game in reach with another goal by Hamelin in the 72nd minute. The Saints got one last shot off in the game but Pierson’s attempt was hauled in to seal the contest.
Candice Lane and Gaby Prellezo split time in goal, recording four and three saves respectively.
Marymount returns to action on Friday, October 1, against Trinity (D.C.) in non-conference play at 1 p.m.
