Volleyball Falls to UMW in CAC Finale
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s volleyball team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference finale 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-23) to Mary Washington on Wednesday night.
Michelle McCormick led the Saints (10-20, 2-6 CAC) with nine kills while Johanna Hummel added seven and Sharda Braxton had six in the loss. Defensively, Chelsea Gates collected a match-high 12 digs while Braxton led the way with three blocks.
Marymount looked to be in control early in the match, leading 16-9 and 20-13 in the first set before the Eagles mounted a comeback. Mary Washington battled off four set points while the Saints rallied back from one before falling 29-27 in the frame.
The Eagles (18-7, 6-2 CAC) controlled the second set behind a .300 attach percentage and holding MU to a .100 clip.
In the third, the Saints and Eagles combined for 11 ties and three lead changes. Knotted up at 20-20, Marymount battled back from a 23-20 deficit before eventually falling 25-23 to close out the match.
Laura Gomez led the Eagles with 11 kills while Hannah Lawson added 10. Lawson also notched a double-double with 11 digs.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday, closing out the season by hosting a tri-match with Eastern Mennonite and Susquehanna.
