Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s soccer team picked up a non-conference win with a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon. The Saints move to 4-8-3 overall on the season.
A pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the game was all the Saints would need to earn their fifth shutout of the season.
Garrett Peters opened the scoring in the third minute, intercepting an errant header from an SVU defender back to the keeper. Peters collected the ball and found the back of the net in front of a stunned Knights netminder.
Adding a cushion goal just six minutes later, Freddy Bonilla would take a pass from Peters at the top of the box and loft a shot over the Southern Virginia keeper for his third goal of the season.
Marymount pelted the Knights with a barrage of 19 shots on the day.
In goal, Daniel Keefe and Juan Aguilar combined for the shutout. Keefe manned the pipes for the first 82 minutes, collecting a pair of saves, while Aguilar closed things out the rest of the way.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday as they take on St. Mary’s (Md.) in a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference showdown on the road.
