Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s basketball team has clinched the second-seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament and will host the semifinals on Thursday at the Verizon Sports Arena. The Saints earned a First Round bye and will face the winner of Tuesday’s game between York (Pa.) and St. Mary’s (Md.).
Tip-off for Thursday’s game is set for 7 p.m. Admission is free with a valid Marymount University ID while tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Fans that can’t make the game can follow the action via ‘live stats’ at http://muweb.marymount.edu/~jmessman/basketball/xlive.htm
A trio of seniors pace the Saints on the hardwood. Amanda Billy leads Marymount with 13.0 points per game. She recently set the program record for career-three pointers made and also broke her own single game record for threes while tying the MU record for points in a game with 42.
Maame Amponsah leads all Division III players with 15.8 rebounds per game and adds 12.0 ppg to average a double-double on the season. She has posted 17 double-doubles on the year and grabbed at least 20 boards in five different games including a program record 22 in December.
Beth Wiggins is having a true all-around season, averaging 9.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. She has posted five double-doubles so far this year.
Marymount went 13-9 during the regular season and 11-5 in CAC action. The Saints swept St. Mary’s on the year but lost both contests to York.
Should Marymount win on Thursday, the Saints will advance to the CAC Finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal featuring top-seed Mary Washington and the winner of the First Round game between Wesley and Frostburg State. If either the Bobcats or Wolverines defeat UMW and the Saints win on Thursday, Marymount would host the championship game.2010-11 Capital Athletic Conference Playoff Schedule
