Women’s Volleyball Tops St. Mary’s in Five-Set Thriller, Remains Undefeated in CAC Play
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s volleyball team moved to a perfect 4-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play with a hard-fought 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10) victory over visiting St. Mary’s (Md.) on Wednesday night. The Saints move to 21-6 overall on the season and remain in first place in the league standings.
Trading sets to force a fifth and deciding frame, Marymount ran out to an early 7-2 lead to force a Seahawk (11-6, 2-2 CAC) timeout. St. Mary’s would rally to pull within two points at 8-6, but a kill from the MU libero Michelle McCormick on the next point gave the Saints a three-point cushion they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.
Three Saints recorded double-figure kills, led by Jenn Forbes and Johanna Hummel with a match-high 12 each. Erin Allison added 11 to go with 13 digs for a double-double.
Each of Marymount’s setters logged double-doubles as well. Melissa Warren posted 33 assists and 10 digs while Brianne Fitzpatrick added 14 assists and 11 digs. Both also notched three service aces.
Defensively, McCormick led all players with 21 digs while Cassidie Watson chipped in 15. Forbes recorded six blocks while both Morgan McAlpin and Hummel added three.
Mandy Goodspeed and Shelby Mullennix led the Seahawks with 10 kills each. Goodspeed also had a double-double with 10 blocks, as did both of SMC’s setters with assists and digs.
