Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s soccer team released its 2012 schedule, as announced by head coach Gayle Smith Wilson on Tuesday. The Saints begin play at their new home field at Long Bridge Park during the upcoming campaign.
“This is going to be a very exciting year for the program,” Wilson said. “We’re looking forward to finally getting to play on our new home field at Long Bridge Park and play an extremely competitive schedule.”
Marymount kicks off the season by hosting its inaugural opening weekend classic. The Saints host nearby Trinity (D.C.) on Friday with Hood taking on Greensboro while MU battles the Pride on Saturday with the Blazers and Tigers closing out the competition.
Key dates include a pair of Capital Athletic Conference doubleheaders with the men’s team on September 29 and October 13. The Saints host Salisbury in on the 29th during homecoming weekend while battling rival Mary Washington on the 13th during ‘Senior Day’.
In an interesting twist, the Saints play nearly as many former or future CAC programs, four, as they do current teams, six. Along with the full slate of league contests, MU battles future conference member Southern Virginia at home as well as former CAC foes Hood, Gallaudet and Goucher all on the road.
Marymount went 5-10-1 overall in 2011 and returns 18 letterwinners from last season.
