Friday, July 01, 2011
The Marymount community welcomes Matthew D. Shank, Ph.D., to campus as he begins his tenure as the University’s sixth president.

Susan Gleason ’12, a Nursing major, says, “We’re really looking forward to getting to know him!”

Dana Mannarino ’14, a Fashion Merchandising major, agrees, adding, “One of the great things about Marymount is that it’s a small community that promotes interaction. Many students knew our last president well, and I’m sure that Dr. Shank will want to continue that tradition.”

Andrew Lewis ’11, who graduated this May with a B.A. in Philosophy, notes, “Campus Ministry and volunteer service were really important parts of my Marymount experience. I know that Dr. Shank has a strong commitment to Catholic higher education, and I’m eager to see how Marymount’s Catholic identity continues to be strengthened under his leadership.”

Jackie Campa ’12, a Psychology major and class senator in the Student Government Association, says, “The SGA looks forward to working closely with President Shank. We’re in the middle of great changes here, with the new 26th Street buildings and a number of campus renovation projects coming up. The students are excited to see the forward momentum continue!”

Dr. Shank comes to Marymount from the University of Dayton, where he served as dean of the School of Business Administration. He says, “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Marymount University, an institution well known for its Catholic character, academic excellence, and strong commitment to students. I look forward to working with Marymount’s trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends to carry forward its mission to educate students intellectually, morally, and spiritually for successful lives.”

Barry J. Fitzpatrick, chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, observes, “Dr. Shank has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability, strong commitment to Catholic higher education, and an impressive academic background. He is a well respected teacher, scholar, and administrator. He is also a leader who clearly understands the mission of Catholic higher education and works to advance that mission.”

Dr. Shank joined the University of Dayton in 2008 as professor of marketing and dean of the School of Business Administration. Previously, he was a faculty member and chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Northern Kentucky University. During academic year 2003-04, Dr. Shank was an American Council on Education Fellow, assigned to the Office of the Chancellor at Vanderbilt University. He has also held academic appointments at the University of Mississippi and Southern Illinois University.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Shank has written several books, published numerous articles, and presented at many conferences. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Missouri/St. Louis.
