Women’s Volleyball Wins Home Opener
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s volleyball team defeated visiting Washington (Md.) 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 12-25, 25-20) in its home opener on Wednesday night. The Saints defeat the Shorewomen for the fourth-straight year and move to 2-3 on the season.
Jenn Forbes and Johanna Hummel led the Saints with 10 kills each on the night while Erin Allison added nine. Melissa Warren paced the offense with a match-high 31 assists and Michelle McCormick notched four service aces in the match.
Defensively, Cassidie Watson collected a match-best 21 digs while McCormick added 13. Forbes and Hummel were also solid at the net, logging four and three blocks, respectively.
Falling behind in the opening frame 5-1, the Saints rallied to tie things up at 12-12. Taking it from there, MU went on a 13-5 run down the stretch to put the frame away courtesy of a service ace by Warren.
In the second, a close first half turned in the Saints favor behind six-straight service points from Morgan McAlpin to give Marymount a 19-12 advantage en route to the 25-16 victory.
In the fourth, another close stanza was broken open by the serving of Courtny Carroll, turning the tide of a 20-17 game to a 23-18 near victory. McAlpin would close out the match with an ace to give MU the win.
Sarah Beresik and Kristin Lee led Washington with seven kills each. Kate Liccione, Cara Koontz and Lee each had 13 digs for the Shorewomen while Jenny Lee added four blocks.
Marymount returns to action over the weekend at the Catholic University Invitational. The Saints face Misericordia and Randolph on Friday before taking on the host Cardinals and Methodist on Saturday.
