Women’s Volleyball Splits Day Two at Catholic Invitational; Finishes Third
Washington, D.C. – Marymount University’s women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches to finish in third place at the Catholic Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Saints opened the day with a 3-1 (25-16, 19-26, 25-14, 25-16) victory over Mt. St. Vincent before falling to eventual tournament champion Swarthmore 3-0 (25-17, 30-28, 25-18) to close out the weekend.
Cassidie Watson earned All-Tournament Team recognition after an impressive week defensively on the back row for the Blue and White (3-3).
In the win over the Dolphins, Emileigh Rettig led the Saints with 12 kills while Morgan McAlpin added 11 at a stellar .583 hitting percentage. Brianne Fitzpatrick paced the MU offense with 22 assists with Zacharie Jackson adding another 13.
Defensively, Watson collected 23 digs, Erin Allison put together another 10 while Fitzpatrick nearly notched a double-double with nine. Hannah Steger was credited with a team-high six blocks while Emily Shultis added five.
Against the Garnet, Allison led the Saints with 15 kills to go with 21 digs for a double-double. McAlpin, Rettig and Johanna Hummel each added seven kills while Fitzpatrick added 29 assists to lead the Blue and White.
Watson hauled in another 25 digs with Rettig adding 17.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face Washington (Md.) in non-conference action.
