Women’s Soccer Blanks Trinity to Open 2012 Victorious
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s soccer team kicked off the 2012 season with a 7-0 shutout victory over visiting Trinity (D.C.) in the opening game of the Marymount Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Saints played their first game at their new home facility at Long Bridge Park.
Freshman Alex Thomas led the Saints (1-0) with a hat-trick in her first career game while fellow rookies Melissa Fessenden and Emily Del Signore both added a pair of goals.
Senior Stephanie Flood and sophomore Nicole Mercado each contributed a pair of assists on the day while senior Katie Hamelin and sophomore Kiki Weaver both added one.
Marymount controlled the game from the open kickoff, holding possession in Tiger (0-1) territory for the vast majority of the first half. Thomas put the Saints on the board in the 14th minute, scoring on a cross from Stephanie Flood. She added another less than five minutes later on an almost identical play.
Keeping the momentum going, Fessenden notched her first goal a mere 25 seconds after Thomas’ second. Intercepting an off kickoff, she raced down the field and put away her own rebound on a one-on-one match-up with the Trinity keeper.
The Saints kept things going in the second half, scoring two goals in the 48th minute. Fessenden put home the first followed by Del Signore’s first just 34 seconds later.
Del Signore would add another goal in the 54th minute while Thomas wrapped up her hat-trick in the 63rd minute.
Victoria Wyand (1-0) picked up the win and the lone save for Marymount in the win. Gaby Prellezo, Holly Wenger and Kenna Thompson each saw time between the pipes to secure the shutout.
Kayla Goss-Brown hauled in an impressive 22 saves for Trinity in the loss.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Greensboro at 12 p.m. Trinity faces Hood at 3 p.m. in the tournament finale.
