Women’s Soccer Remains Undefeated, Shuts Out Greensboro
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s soccer team earned its second consecutive shutout to start the season with a 2-0 victory over visiting Greensboro at the inaugural Marymount Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Saints win their inaugural tournament as the only 2-0 team in the field and outscored their opponents 9-0 on the weekend.
Senior Katie Hamelin came up big for MU, scoring both goals for the Saints. She put Marymount on the board early, taking a slide pass across the end line from freshman Melissa Fessenden to tap in the goal at the 4:16 mark.
Hamelin sealed the victory for the Saints in the 81st minute, finishing off a pair of passes from Stephanie Flood and Kiki Weaver to beat the Pride (1-1) keeper point blank in front of the goal.
Anchored by sophomores Danni Bankins and Hannah Boswell in the middle, Marymount’s defense was solid all day and allowed just six total shots from Greensboro including none in the first half. In goal, Victoria Wyand (2-0) earned her second win of the year and collected a pair of saves in the shutout.
Marymount returns to action Tuesday as it travels to face McDaniel in non-conference play.
