Arlington, VA – Fashion designer Eileen Fisher has been selected to receive Marymount University’s 2012 Designer of the Year award at Portfolio in Motion
, the annual Marymount student fashion show. The show and award presentation will be held on Thursday, May 3, at 8:30 p.m. in the University’s Rose Benté Lee Center, located on Marymount’s Main Campus. A reception will precede the show at 7 p.m.
Marymount’s Designer of the Year Award is presented annually to a fashion designer who has achieved excellence in the field and has captured the imagination of both the fashion industry and the public. Eileen Fisher joins an illustrious list of honorees that includes Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Isabel Toledo, Junko Yoshioka, and Oscar de la Renta.
With a background in interior and graphic design, Eileen Fisher launched EILEEN FISHER, INC.
, in 1984. With only $350 in the bank and no sewing experience, she brought her vision for simple, timeless, comfortable women’s clothing that works as a “wardrobing concept” to life through four simple shapes cut in high quality fabrics. Today the company has 58 stores in 18 states and two countries. The founding design principle – that a garment should be timeless and transcend a moment in fashion – still guides the design team.
Ms. Fisher explains, “We find that good design is a result of paying attention to what women want and need. The women who wear our clothes want to experience the magic that happens when you put on a piece of clothing that has been pared to its simple, pure essence. It comes alive on your body; it changes the way you think and feel about yourself.” She adds, “You put such garments on and know that they will give you the comfort, ease, and elegance to move with confidence through your day.” As one customer puts it, “What I love most about EILEEN FISHER clothes is that they allow me to be myself.”
Marymount looks forward to welcoming Eileen Fisher to campus and presenting her with the 2012 Designer of the Year Award at the Portfolio in Motion
show. Portfolio in Motion
is the culminating academic project for the University’s Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising students and every aspect – from the jury-selected student designs to all elements of the show’s production – reflects their academic and creative efforts. After seeing the show, Ms. Fisher will review the senior Fashion Design students’ portfolios, sharing her expertise and knowledge of the fashion industry with these young people who are just beginning their fashion careers.
