Getting Started

Students are encouraged to start planning their global education experience as soon as they arrive at Marymount. Regardless of what type of international opportunity you choose to pursue, all require time and careful planning to successfully carry out.  Get started by following these essential steps:

Step 1: Attend a Global Education General Information Session (GIS)
All students are required to attend a GIS before meeting one-on-one with a study abroad coordinator to take the next steps in planning their international experience.  General Information Sessions are offered every Tuesday from 12:30pm - 1:30pm in the Center for Global Education Conference Room.  Attendance is recorded and it is important that students arrive on time and stay for the full hour.  Due to the volume of information that is included in each session, the doors will close after the designated start time. If you have any questions, please contact our office at 703-284-6474.
Step 2: Identify Your Goals
Use these questions to learn what is important to you in your study abroad experience before further exploring the program options you learned about during the GIS.
Step 3: Consider Your Program Options
There are many to choose from! The Center for Global Education can connect you with hundreds of programs in over 50 countries ranging in length from one week to ten months.  Review the different program types that are linked on our home page to learn more about your options. Our financial information provides details on billing and payment, scholarships and financial aid to help you select a program within your budget. Studying abroad can be quite affordable for students who take the time to research costs and scholarship opportunities.  There are numerous programs which cost the same or less than a semester at Marymount.
Step 4: Meet with a Study Abroad Coordinator
Once you have identified your goals and explored potential options, schedule an appointment with one of our study abroad coordinators to get more detailed information, ask questions, and receive assistance in selecting the right program. Marymount students can book an appointment online. Non-Marymount students must call 703-284-6474 to book an appointment.
Step 5: Meet with your Academic Advisor
Plan early!  Talk with your academic advisor as soon as possible about your intent to study abroad.  Some courses may be easier than others to take abroad. Furthermore, depending on your major, you may need to go abroad during a specific semester in order to make sure you fulfill the requirements for your degree on time.  Once you have selected a program, you will need to meet with your academic advisor again to make sure the courses you plan to take will satisfy your academic requirements and keeps you on track for graduation.
Step 6: Apply!
Once you have completed the above steps, you are ready to apply to your program.  Please refer to the appropriate application process for your specific program type on the How to Apply page.
